FishHabitatNexus.com for environmental impact assessment practitioners

Posted by admin

FishHabitatNexus.com is an impartial, objective platform for information exchange to support the evolution of predictable, effective decision‐making on development projects.

The intent of FishHabitatNexus.com is to:

  • Facilitate development activities in a manner that conserves, protects and enhances the capacity of habitats to produce fish.
  • Grow the marketplace for fish habitat management solutions through services, products and science.

The Need

In Canada, the Major Projects Management Office in Natural Resources Canada estimates > $300 billion in emerging major natural resource development projects, over the next 10 years, requiring approvals. Fish habitat approvals are also needed for infrastructure, highway, housing subdivision, port, etc. projects. Proponents frequently comment that these approvals are often the most pivotal, uncertain, difficult and time consuming to obtain.

Fish need productive habitat to maintain their populations that provide food and socioeconomic benefits. Development and construction projects are necessary (e.g., mining, oil & gas, housing subdivisions, highways, etc.) and frequently interact with fish habitat. A majority of projects require review, mitigation and approvals with respect to the Fisheries Act. In Canada, recreational fisheries directly contribute $1.9 billion and indirectly contribute $5 billion annually. Commercial fisheries contribute $2 billion per year.

To improve understanding and facilitate sustainable development, FishHabitatNexus.com provides an internet platform for open dissemination of information concerning past experience, practices, regulatory requirements and solutions. It is expected that the market for Service Providers will grow by creating a focal point and fostering increased proponent awareness.
