AquaOptima builds state-of-the-art recirculation aquaculture systems (RAS)
AquaOptima AS, based in Trondheim, Norway, has suffered like everyone else from the global financial crisis. In November 2008, several contract negotiations were stopped and some contracts were cancelled.
Recently, however, the situation has begun to change and the company is now negotiating with potential clients in several countries who wish to utilize AquaOptima’s unique recirculation aquaculture technology. For example, a contract worth NOK 40 million (USD 7.1 million) to supply a RAS eel farm to Portugal was signed in August. The farm is located about 150 km north of Lisbon and the client, FindFresh S.A., is a consortium of Portuguese and Spanish companies involved in the catch and sale of wild eels.
AquaOptima supplied a similar eel farm to China earlier in 2009, as well as RAS culture facilities for several other species around the world, including salmon, trout, Arctic charr, halibut, seabream, seabass, tilapia, tiger puffer fish and barramundi.
Recently, AquaOptima was chosen as supplier for the R&D RAS facility for NOFIMA at Sunndalsøra, Norway, probably the world’s largest R&D recirculation facility. In addition, it has designed and supplied a RAS grow-out farm for Barramundi in Iran, and is involved in retrofitting an existing farm for flounder farm in Peru. Staff from the Iranian barramundi farm visited Norway in August to learn how to install and operate RAS systems.
